Functional Capacity
Assessments
Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs) are comprehensive, strengths-based assessments designed to build an understanding of a person’s strengths, support needs and everyday functioning across home, school, work and community environments.
Assessments draw on multiple sources of information including observations, collaborative conversations, questionnaires, review of relevant reports and functional assessment data to develop meaningful, evidence-informed recommendations.
Using a data-informed and person-centred approach, recommendations aim to reflect both measurable patterns of functioning and individual experiences to support participation, independence and quality of life.
What FCAs are
FCAs bring together information from multiple sources to understand a person’s strengths, support needs and everyday functioning.
This helps inform practical, meaningful recommendations that support participation and independence in daily life.
What support may include
✓ Functional assessment and data collection
✓ Understanding daily living skills and independence
✓ Exploring communication, learning and social participation
✓ Review of relevant reports and assessment findings
✓ Identifying barriers and supports across environments
✓ Collaboration with families, educators and allied health professionals
✓ Data-informed recommendations and goal planning
✓ Supporting NDIS access, review and planning processes where appropriate
Who this may suit
Children, adolescents and adults who would benefit from a deeper understanding of support needs, functional capacity and evidence-informed recommendations to guide future supports.
This may be helpful when planning for NDIS access, plan reviews, school supports, service transitions and changes in home or community environments.
